First Ski Lesson in Zurs Austria 1906
Ski pioneer Viktor Sohm organized the first ski lesson in Zürs Alberg, Austria in 1906. The participants are from left; Fritz Ikle from St. Gallen, Switzerland, mountain guide Ferdinand Schallert from Bludenz, Franz Josef Mathies, also known as “Avalanche Franz Josef” after surviving 30 hours buried in an avalanche, Englebert Strolz from Zürs, the future world famous ski pioneer, Hans Schneider.
from Stuben, Albert Mathies from Zürs and Theresia Sohm from Bregenz. At first, ski lessons were only available for the locals but as the popularity of the sport grew tourists also had the opportunity to take ski lessons since the early 1920’s.
