SOLD - BASTIEN BROTHERS "BIG CHIEF" - Antique Snowshoes
A pair of handmade Bastien Brothers "Big Chief" of Huron Quebec snowshoes. The teardrop shape snowshoes feature ash wood frames with hand woven animal webbing and leather harnesses.
The Huron traditional wood snowshoe is great for hunting, trapping, and long hikes in open forests and fields. Very quiet and easy to maneuver, its design provides great flotation in soft snow and its streamlined tail helps maintain a straight trajectory.
Bastien Brothers were located in Village des Huron (formerly also Loretteville, now called Wendake). They were one of many First Nations builders in that region. For at least part of their history they were marketed under the name Big Chief Canoes & snowshoes. The firm still exists, but only manufactures moccasins today.
