SOLD - 1938 Swiss Military Tornister (Fällaff) Rucksack
This is an increasingly scarce well-preserved pre-World War II rucksack (Tornister), made in Switzerland for the Swiss infantry troops up in the mountains. Backpack was made by saddler Büttikofer of Fribourg (Switzerland) in 1938. Canvas behind front looks brand new. KMV "Privat" stamp on the inside of the main compartment, indicating that this backpack was released from military service for private ownership. This beautiful, used rucksack is in unbelievable condition for its age. Every part is original and intact, with only some very minor signs of wear that only add authenticity and character to the bag. There are no tears, rips, or loose stitching.
Cowhide & leather is in excellent condition. Shoulder straps are full leather construction. Due to wear two small areas where the straps are inserted are missing a bit of fur (see photos). Canvas behind front flap looks brand new.
The coolest part of this pack is that it is covered in cowhide fur. Because of the somewhat strange aesthetic, this pack was nicknamed “Fällaff” by some of the soldiers (meaning “hairy ape”).
