Vintage Swiss "F. JORG" Ice Axe
This rare & very clean ice axe was made by the renown blacksmith Fritz Jörg in the small hamlet of Zweilütschinen in the Interlaken-Oberhasli district. One side of the head is inscribed with “F. JORG ZWEILUTSCHINEN BERNER OBERLAND”. It has a wonderful patina that only comes with age. It features its original wrist leash, solid wooden shaft, curved adze and a traditional shaped spike. A wonderful old wooden ice axe from the heart of the Swiss Alps to add that extra decoration touch to your home or mountain lodge.
In the 1880’s climbers were beginning to arrive in the Swiss Alps in great numbers and ice axes became popular. There were four well known craftsmen producing ice axes in the same area of the Bernese Alps; Bhend & Schenk in Grindelwald, Jorg in Zweilutschinen, and Hasler in Lutschental. These ice axes were & still considered the very best available at the time.
