This antique short handle ice axe was manufactured in Chamonix, France by the famous "Simond Brothers". The handle is in fair shape and shows signs of being well used. The metal adze is in good shape with "A. Simond & Frères, A Chamonix" with a flower and a barely visible Chamois engraved. This specific model was mainly used to make steps in the ice.
The Simond Brothers started making farming tools in 1820 and later, in 1860 moved on to manufacturing mountaineering equipment. Today, they are still considered the pioneers of ice axes.
