Our antique snowshoes come from North America. These amazing handcrafted snowshoes were made from seasoned ash, oak or maple wood ~ hand woven with rawhide and most of them still have their original leather bindings. They are all in very good shape considering their age and could still be used out on the snow or to hang on the wall.

Circa 1960's. Excellent condition. The Ojibwe traditional wood snowshoes unique shape provides a great flotation in opened forest and field where there is a lot of snow. Its narrow and lifted nose, combined with its long narrow tail, are providing great gliding properties in downhill on hard snow. Quiet and stable, it is a good all-around snowshoe for long distance adventure. The name Ojibwe comes from one of the largest of the Native peoples of Canada that settled along the Great Lakes in Ontario, in western Canada and north-central United States. This highly aesthetic snowshoe is one of the oldest of traditional wooden snowshoes. Curiously, it resembles those used by the ancient peoples of Siberia, Greenland and Scandinavia many centuries ago.

These traditional Cree snowshoes were found in the first nations reserve of "Atikamekw of Manawan" in Quebec & are in fair condition considering their age. 

The Cree snowshoes consisted of using cloth rope straps which were often replaced &/or upgraded to leather straps due to the elements.

These well used pair of "Bear Paw" vintage snowshoes were made by a Mme. Abel Pelletier et fils, in St. Aubert Que. All the webbing is intact as well as the leather bindings which need a bit of cleaning. The use of bear paw snowshoes like these can be traced back to eastern and northern Canadian Indian people. The Bear Paw model is the second most well-known snowshoe shape. It originated among the Indian peoples of eastern Canada and from the Canadian Far North, particularly from the Innu people (Montagnais). It is mostly used for hunting, trapping, and long-distance hikes in dense forests. If you are looking for a fine pair of antique snowshoes to enhance your chalet decoration, these would look great!

These traditional Cree snowshoes were found in the first nations reserve of "Atikamekw of Manawan" in Quebec & are in fair condition considering their age. Some of the rawhide webbing has been repaired with cotton rope. Rather than using leather bindings, the Cree snowshoes consisted of using cloth rope straps (no longer attached) which were often replaced due to the elements.
Those red bits are the remains of pompoms, dyed tufts of possibly caribou fur, the red color indicating the Cree Nation. The purpose of the pompoms is that animal fur would mask human scent, and ideally one would craft the pompoms using fur of the game animal one was primarily hunting.

Bastien Brothers brand snowshoes. Handmade in Canada. This set of snowshoes is in really good condition - notice the tightly woven rawhide.  Original leather bindings are still supple enough to be used. Leather bindings were a major upgrade from a simple cloth rope tie, which constituted the foot attachments on the earliest snowshoes.

Originally these snowshoe "planks" were made by the indians from Little Whale River in Quebec, Canada. The first ones made were from 1894 and were called "Papatshitakusham" snowshoes made from two flat spruce planks. They were mostly used in Spring for travelling over soft, slushy snow. The other regular netted snowshoes became clogged with slush, rendering the weight very fatiguing.

This is a pair of 1940s antique snowshoes. The bear claw shaped wood frame has rope webbing and cotton rope bindings. This pair are most likely the earliest model of “Hiverna” snowshoes manufactured in Saint-André-Le-Gaz, France and were also used by the French Alpine troops. The cotton rope bindings were later replaced with canvas straps. They are in very good condition for their age and a very rare find indeed.

A pair of handmade Bastien Brothers snowshoes from Huron Quebec. The "Huron" snowshoes feature ash wood frames with hand woven animal webbing and leather harnesses. The babiche weaving is in incredibly good condition. Their design suggests recreational use with heavy loads. These are durable wooden frames and the rawhide is strong - these snowshoes were built to last with their original dark leather bindings.  

The Huron traditional wood snowshoe is great for hunting, trapping, and long hikes in open forests and fields. Very quiet and easy to maneuver, its design provides great flotation in soft snow and its streamlined tail helps maintain a straight trajectory.

These are very good looking & long vintage "Alaskan" snowshoes from the Huron-Wendat reserve in Quebec, Canada.  Similar to a large Ojibwa snowshoe in general shape and function, the Alaskan's upturned toe, large surface area, and sleek profile excel at covering open trail distances through any depth of snow. These are excellent snowshoe for large people, for carrying large packs, and for those who prefer the classic frontiersman style. At some point in time the toe bindings were replaced and the heel straps are made of cotton. If you are looking for a fine pair of antique snowshoes to use in the snow or enhance your chalet decoration, these are for you!
