SOLD - Antique "BLIZZARD" Skis (Unrestored)
These rare & clean pair of vintage "BLIZZARD" (Arnsteiner) 215 cm skis are from Mittersill in Austria. They are equipped with "Exzelsioc" toe bindings & "Tyrolia" racing heel bindings. The bases are made of polyethylene (Blizzard became the first manufacturer to mass-produce these bases). Both the tips and tails are equipped with metal "slip on" protectors. These skis are probably from 1953/54 as the Arnsteiner name was later removed and only marked Blizzard. The R.S. marked on the skis stands for “Riesen Slalom” (Giant Slalom).
The leather binding straps (aka “Long Thongs” wraps) are each 180cm in length (!) and were also designed to support the ankle. They are complete and in great condition (the edges are a bit rusty and one of the leather straps has been replaced with a new one).
After the War, Anto “Toni” Arnsteiner took over his parents’ carpentry workshop in Mittersill and began developing wooden skis which he marketed as Glockner skis and later, from 1953, as Blizzard. In its heyday, the Mittersill plant produced up to 500,000 pairs of skis a year. In 1992, after Arnsteiner’s retirement, Blizzard was sold to the Raiffeisen cooperative bank in Salzburg and then in 2006, to the Tecnica Group of Italy which still owns Blizzard today.
